Winery Spotlight: Vins Finca Sa Punta

Vins Finca Sa Punta is an example of unique Mallorcan winemaking. It’s a family affair and humble preservation of Mallorca’s millennia-old wine culture. It appears to operate “underground,” without the power of advertisement. They supply the town, the restaurants, and the local supermarkets with handcrafted wines. Like many bodegas on the island, the family happily invites you in but does not necessarily have established tastings. They are there to sell their wine, of course, but also to share it.

The Finca Sa Punta Story

The Vilaire family of Sineu began their wine-making journey in 2015 when a plot of almond trees had to be excavated due to disease. The trees were uprooted, and 537 Merlot vines were planted in their place. As the family noticed a lack of single-varietal wines being made in Mallorca, they decided to focus solely on the Merlot grape. The result is a wine for all occasions.

100% Mallorcan Merlot

Merlot, in general, is a smooth wine that gains body when cultivated in warm climates. The natural body of this Merlot combines with the signature minerality of Mallorcan wines drawn from the island’s rocky soil. The result is a deep, smooth, and highly drinkable wine.

In color, the wine is a dark violet. The nose is full of red fruit and spice. The tongue is smooth and agreeable, as the deep fruit flavors are balanced nicely by a touch of pepper in the back of the throat and a long-lasting finish elaborated with sweet vanilla.

The wine adheres to the standards set by the Vi de la Terra de Mallorca designation label, but you will notice that no origin is given on the bottle. This is where modern bureaucracy meets artistic agricultural expression. Due to the small size of Sa Punta’s vineyard, they cannot license a wine cellar; thus, the Merlot is processed in the town of Consell at Bodega Karretánia. The labeling, too, was affected by the law. Initially, the Vilaires had a new, custom-designed label each year, but with this year’s bottling, the family formalized a single emblem of the “family tree.”

Winemaking for the Vilaires is a family affair. They care for the grapes daily throughout all seasons. The result of this family hobby in art and agriculture is a treat for the taster: a small-batch wine of compassion over consumerism.

How to Get to Vins Finca Sa Punta

The winery is located on the outskirts of Sineu, a small village in the center of the island just east of Inca.

By Car: The easiest way to reach Sineu from Palma is by car: take Ma-13 towards Inca use exit 27 to turn onto Ma-3240 to arrive to Sineu. The drive takes about 40 minutes.

By Train: You also have the option of taking the T3 Manacor train from Palma’s main station (Estación Intermodal) for an hour ride that drops you off at the Sineu train station. Although the train ride is slightly longer, it’s worth considering, especially if you’re planning on enjoying a tasting at the vineyard! Taking in the stunning views as you ride through the Mallorcan countryside is an experience in and of itself.

By Taxi: If you are planning a full wine tasting, taxis can also be ordered to ensure a safe round trip. The winery can help with the reservation of taxis.
